Barcelona to prohibit room rental for less than a month!

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, in which the tourism sector in Spain has been heavily affected, Barcelona City Council declared its intention to ban room rental for less than a month to prevent the spread of tourist rentals in the city.

Tourist or short-term rentals have long been a contentious issue in Barcelona and the Council is planning to keep its development curbed. Ada Colau, the mayor of Barcelona, and her council have suggested this new initiative as part of a selection of new initiatives to protect long term rentals from being destroyed by tourists' lets, meaning that people will be able to rent rooms in their own homes for stays of at least 30 days.

This maybe unexpected rule has been met with criticism and hesitation in the current environment, but it is anticipated that the final plan will be approved in August 2021. According to the Barcelona Councilor for Urban Planning, Janet Sanz, "allowing this form of city rental (currently estimated at 14,000) would lead to a huge increase in the tourist supply in the city and to risk, since 670,000 houses could accommodate tourists."

Deputy Mayor also cautioned that "holiday rental sites like Airbnb need to delete advertisements by prohibiting these activities because it will not be an operation that is allowed," although Airbnb expressed concern at these potential steps.

In support of its new initiative, the council concluded that Barcelona already has "154,000 managed beds, which are more than enough supplies," the plan regulating accommodation in Barcelona, which the government initially agreed during the presentation of changes to PEUAT.
